2021 Principles
Principles > Goals
As one does around the new year, I’ve been thinking about why setting goals for this year wasn’t particularly effective. Last year (and other years before it) I would specify an outcome like gaining X pounds of muscle, speaking at an event with Y attendees, or finishing Z books. While accomplishing a goal was a source of satisfaction, The carrot at the end of the stick was still a carrot. The incentive of accomplishing a goal for its own sake wasn’t enticing by comparison to the amount of effort required! I also hadn’t spent much time learning about habit formation or adopting a personal philosophy of life (both stil WIP, with most knowledge still coming from pop psychology books and podcasts).

2019 Pan Mass Challenge
A 192 Mile Ride to PTown
I recently signed up for the 2019 PMC, a bike ride generating charitable donations that go completely to the Jimmy Fund. The fund promotes the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute here in Boston. All funds raised go completely to cancer research, primarily to seed funding for early stage studies.

How Important is a Vacation?
Last week I returned from a 10 day trip to Spain and France. Would recommend! I’ve been looking forward to getting some time away from work now that I’ve been out of school for exactly a year. I’ve always been a crummy work/life balancer, even though I seem to be getting the same amount done each week regardless of how much time I spend working out of the office. The “work smarter, not harder” philosophy has been gaining popularity, and I’m starting to realize why.

Headed Home
Back to NY for the weekend
It’s been awhile since I’ve been home to see family. Taking a trip back tends to put things into perspective. Since settling into the new job, time has been passing considerably faster than while in school. Hard to to think that it’s almost been a year since graduation.

Sokothai
Ancient Thai Capital
Sokothai was an incredible joy to visit, if only for a day. The city is composed of a central ‘inner city’ area which consists of a national park and several historic temples and structures. We were able to see all of the popular sights in Sokothai in one day, choosing to use a motorbike rather than the traditional bycicle mode of transport used by tourists in the area.

Greetings from Thailand!
A Trip Across the World
The new year has brought my first true international traveling experience (excluding Canada and Mexico) through China, Thailand, and Burma. This past week I have been spending time hiking waterfalls, traveling to ancient temples, and viewing tourist shows all over northern Thailand.
